MANHATTAN, Kan.(AP) Kansas State football coach Ron Prince signed a five-year contract through 2012, receiving a vote of confidence from school administrators after the team struggled to a disappointing finish last season.

Prince's base salary will be $143,000 with a total guaranteed package of $1.1 million, which includes compensation from endorsements and personal appearances, the university said Thursday. Prince could also earn up to an additional $950,000 per year in performance-based incentives.

"We are pleased with the direction of our football program," athletics director Bob Krause said in a statement. "He has a plan in place and is right on course with that plan."

Prince took over after the retirement of Bill Snyder and led the Wildcats to a bowl game in 2006. But Kansas State lost four straight to finish 5-7 last season, including an embarrassing 73-31 defeat at Nebraska, and many already were wondering how much longer Prince would last.

"I am very appreciative of the commitment that the university has shown," Prince said in a statement. "We feel that we are on schedule with our plan of building a fast, tough, strong and disciplined program and are looking forward to this season and many seasons to come."
