Bethune-Cookman beats Morgan State

BALTIMORE(AP) Maurice Francois threw for 125 yards, including an 82-yard touchdown to Phillip Kirkland, and Bethune-Cookman scored twice off turnovers to beat Morgan State 31-27 on Saturday.

Francois' touchdown pass to Kirkland with 5:55 left in the third quarter gave the Wildcats (4-1, 2-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a 31-21 lead. Bethune-Cookman had only two first downs in the second half.

Morgan State cut the margin to four points when Carlton Jackson found Edwin Baptiste for a 27-yard passing score. James Meade's extra point attempt was then blocked by Bethune-Cookman and Morgan State could not score a touchdown in the closing minutes.

Devan James ran for 113 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown for the Bears (2-3, 0-1).

The Wildcats scored on its opening two possessions on a 5-yard run by Brian Sumlar and a 24-yard run by Corey Council. The Bears scored two touchdowns in the second quarter by Carlton Jackson, who recovered a fumble in the end zone, and a 2-yard run by James.

Morgan State had 312 total yards, compared to 213 for Bethune-Cookman. Travis Roland had two sacks, 6.5 tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown for Bethune-Cookman.
