Central Arkansas holds off Sam Houston

CONWAY, Ark.(AP) Nathan Brown threw three touchdown passes to help Central Arkansas to a 48-46 victory Saturday night over Sam Houston State, and the Bears got a key defensive stop on a two-point conversion attempt by the Bearkats with less than two minutes to play.

Central Arkansas (5-1, 1-0 Southland Conference) built a 34-27 lead at the half but Sam Houston scored 10 unanswered points in the third quarter to lead 37-34.

The Bears took a 48-40 lead on a 60-yard pass from Brown to Willie Landers with 5:51 remaining. The Bearkats (2-2, 0-1) took over on their own 20 and drove to the UCA 3. Wide receiver Catron Houston rushed for the TD to close the gap to 48-46 with 1:40 remaining.

On the two-point conversion attempt, Rhett Bomar threw to Chris Lucas over the middle but free safety Derrick Boyd broke up the pass.

Brown finished 20 of 28 passing for 269 yards, with the three touchdowns and one interception. The pick was Brown's first this season and came after 178 consecutive passes without an interception. He set the school record with 235 consecutive passes last season.

Bomar completed 29 of 47 attempts for 361 yards and three touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for a touchdown. UCA finished with 413 yards of total offense while Sam Houston had 575.
