Byrd's TD lifts Southern in second overtime

BATON ROUGE, La.(AP) C.J. Byrd scored on a 3-yard run in the second overtime to lift Southern to a 31-24 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday night.
Byrd's score held up as Southern's Gary Blackmon intercepted Gyona Turner on Arkansas-Pine Bluff's next possession to end the game.
Warren Matthews threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Juamorris Stewart and ran for an 8-yard touchdown for the Jaguars (5-4, 4-1 Southwest Athletic Conference). Matthews finished with 139 yards passing and 48 on the ground.
Martell Mallett rushed for 166 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries for Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-8, 1-4).
Stewart Franks scored on an 89-yard punt return and Mallett scored on a 40-yard run to give the Golden Lions a 21-14 lead with 6:53 left in the third quarter.
Southern tied the game on Matthews' 8-yard run on the last play of the third quarter.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Carlos Reyes kicked a 38-yard field goal in the first overtime, and Southern's Josh Duran matched it with a 27-yard field goal.
Turner and Jonathan Moore combined to complete only three passes in 21 attempts with four interceptions.
