BALTIMORE(AP) Dennis Mathis rushed for 137 yards and Hampton forced two turnovers, returning one for a touchdown, in a 17-13 victory over Morgan State in the season final for both teams Saturday.
The Pirates (6-5, 5-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) snapped a four-game losing streak, despite 167 in total yards. Devan James, who leads the MEAC with 111.4 yards per game, finished with 112 yards on 25 carries for Morgan State (6-6, 4-4).
The Pirates Herbert Bynes entered the game as the conference's leading passer with 268 yards per game, and he completed only two of seven passes for 43 yards. Bynes did not complete a pass until 12:54 remaining in the fourth quarter, but it was the biggest of the game when found Dyrri McCain for a 38-yard touchdown that was the winning score.
Morgan State drove to the Hampton 10-yard line with 45 seconds left, but a pass by Mario Melton on fourth down was broken up by Ricardo Kemp.
Darren McKhans fumble recovery and run from Hamptons 34-yard line gave Morgan State a 10-3 lead midway through the second quarter.
Hampton tied the game when Kemp intercepted Melton and ran 76 yards in the final play of the first half. Mathis had 93 of Hamptons 94 yards of total offense in the first half. Morgan State had just 90 yards.
