Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) - Justin Tuggle threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Boston College Eagles crushed the Kent State Golden Flashes, 34-7, in non-conference action at Alumni Stadium.
Tuggle completed 6-of-12 for 150 yards, while Dave Shinskie connected on 9- of-16 passing for the Eagles (2-0) for an additional 73 yards and a score as well for the home team.
The Golden Flashes (1-1) struggled on offense, with Spencer Keith accounting for the lone touchdown on the afternoon when he converted a four-yard pass play to Jon Simpson late in the fourth frame. Keith hit on 9-of-14 for just 71 yards, while fellow signal-caller Giorgio Morgan converted 9-of-16 for a meager 38 yards and an interception.
Midway through the first quarter BC began the day's scoring with a 57-yard TD pass from Tuggle to Colin Larmond, Jr. and six minutes later it was Shinskie to Rich Gunnell for 21 yards and a score.
Sophomore running back Montel Harris picked up a one-yard touchdown run in the second period to make the score 21-0. At the 6:26 mark of the quarter, kicker Steve Aponavicius knocked through a 24-yard field goal to give Boston College a huge 24-0 advantage at the break.
Capping a nine-play, 36-yard drive early in the third quarter, Gunnell pulled in a six-yard TD pass from Tuggle to make the score 31-0. Gunnell finished the day with six catches for a game-high 114 yards.
Aponavicius made good on a 33-yard field goal attempt in the third when the Eagles were unable to move the ball, giving the hosts an insurmountable 34-0 edge with 23 minutes remaining.
KSU, which was limited to just 179 yards of total offense, registered nine tackles for loss in the contest, but they failed to make a difference in the outcome.
The Eagles came within mere minutes of recording back-to-back shutouts to begin a season since 1933.
