Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - Jarrett Brown threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns to lead the West Virginia Mountaineers to a 35-20 win over the East Carolina Pirates in non-conference action at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Brown completed 24-of-31 passing for the Mountaineers (2-0), surviving an interception, while Noel Devine led the attack on the ground with 80 yards and a score on 19 carries.
The Pirates (1-1) were paced by Pat Pinkney who converted just 16-of-39 for 175 yards and a touchdown, but he was also picked off once and sacked four times on the afternoon.
ECU actually jumped out to an early 10-0 advantage, thanks to a 37-yard field goal by Ben Hartman and a two-yard TD run by Dominique Lindsay.
Before the end of the first quarter the Mountaineers responded with a 46-yard TD pass from Brown to Alric Arnett. At the 6:27 mark of the second quarter Brown struck again, this time with a four-yard scoring strike to Will Johnson to make the score 14-10 in favor of the home team.
Hartman added a 23-yard field goal later in the frame for the Pirates and Pinkney connected with Jamar Bryant on a four-yard TD pass, but in between Brown and Arnett combined for an 11-yard touchdown play to make the score 21-20 at the break.
The WVU defense held the visitors scoreless in the second half while Brown tossed a 58-yard TD to Tavon Austin in the third quarter and Devine found his way into the end zone on a four-yard effort in the final period to give the Mountaineers a comfortable 15-point win.
West Virginia ran one more offensive play than the Pirates, yet the Mountaineers had a commanding 509-237 advantage in total yards in the contest.
