Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Toby Gerhart ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries to power the Stanford Cardinal to a 42-17 victory over the San Jose State Spartans in non-conference action.
Andrew Luck connected on 9-of-12 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown for Stanford (2-1).
Kevin Jurovich caught nine passes for 103 yards in defeat for San Jose State (0-3).
Stanford led 14-0 after one quarter of play, thanks to a 94-yard kickoff return by Chris Owusu and a three-yard run by Toby Gerhart.
San Jose State cut its deficit to 14-7 in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown pass from Jordan La Secla to Jala Beauchman.
Gerhart then scored his second touchdown with 41 seconds left in the first half, as the one-yard plunge lifted the Cardinal to a 21-7 advantage.
Corey Gatewood intercepted a San Jose State pass and raced 23 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter to increase the Stanford lead to 28-7.
The Spartans then got a 30-yard field goal from Tyler Cope.
Owusu made the score 35-10 with a 22-yard touchdown reception from Luck, and Richard Sherman made it 42-10 with a 48-yard punt return for a touchdown.
San Jose State capped the scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run by Lamon Muldrow.
Both teams finished with 16 first downs, but Stanford posted 154 more total yards than San Jose State (382-228).
