Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Dwayne Harris ran for one touchdown and caught another as he led the East Carolina Pirates to a 19-14 win over the UCF Knights in Conference USA play at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Harris finished the contest with 10 receptions for 121 yards and had three carries for 27 yards in the victory for the Pirates (2-2, 1-0 CUSA). Quarterback Pat Pinkney converted 27-of-40 passing for 293 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the home team.
The Knights (2-2, 0-2) were paced by Brett Hodges who hit on 21-of-34 passing for 266 yards and a score, but he was sacked four times and had four passes intercepted along the way.
UCF opened the game's scoring with a 19-yard TD run by Brynn Harvey midway through the first quarter, but after that ECU ripped off 19 unanswered points and never looked back.
The Pirates began their run with a 20-yard field goal by kicker Ben Hartman later in the first frame and then took the lead with a 25-yard touchdown run by Harris to make the score 10-7 at the break.
Hartman's 19-yard field goal conversion was the only scoring in the third period, while a three-yard TD run by Harris midway through the fourth put the home team up 19-7 following a failed two-point conversion.
With just over a minute remaining in regulation, Hodges combined with Kamar Aiken on a 10-yard scoring strike, but by then it was too little, too late in the five-point decision.
UCF, which controlled the ball for less than nine minutes in the second half and was just 2-of-4 scoring in the red zone, finished the day with just 336 yards of total offense.
