Fort Lauderdale, FL (Sports Network) - Alvester Alexander ran for three touchdowns as the Wyoming Cowboys posted a 30-28 win over the Florida Atlantic Owls in non-conference action at Lockhart Stadium.
Alexander carried the ball 17 times for the Cowboys (3-2), resulting in 50 yards for the visitors as they posted the second straight win. Quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels converted 29-of-38 passing for 223 yards, was intercepted once and sacked three times on the day.
The Owls (0-4) were paced by quarterback Rusty Smith who hit on 17-of-28 passing for 235 yards and a touchdown in the setback.
On the first offensive drive of the afternoon, Chris Bonner knocked through a 36-yard field goal for the Owls to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage less than a minute into action.
At the 5:11 mark of the first quarter Alexander hit the end zone on a one-yard run, capping an 11-play, 80-yard drive.
With less than a minute and a half remaining in the opening period FAU's Tavious Polo picked off a Carta-Samuels pass and returned it 16 yards for a score to give the Owls a 14-7 edge.
Wyoming assumed a 17-14 lead at the break after Brandon Stewart made his way into the end zone on a 23-yard run and Ian Watts knocked through a 39-yard field goal with just 33 seconds remaining in the first half.
A three-yard TD run by Alexander in the third pushed the Wyoming advantage to 10 points at 24-14.
Refusing to give up, Florida Atlantic recorded a pair of touchdowns as Alfred Morris scored on a 14-yard run and Smith locked up with Darian Williams on an 18-yard TD pass play to give the Owls a 28-24 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in regulation.
Alexander posted the game-winning score on a 15-yard TD run and, despite a failed PAT, the Pokes still held on for the two-point road win.
FAU, which had 25 fewer offensive plays than the Cowboys, suffered with just 2-of-9 on third down plays.
