Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Jarrett Brown threw for 244 yards and one touchdown as the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the Syracuse Orange, 34-13, in Big East action at the Carrier Dome.
Noel Devine, who was on the receiving end of Brown's touchdown pass, also led the ground game for West Virginia (4-1, 1-0 BigEast) with 91 yards and one score on 22 carries.
Greg Paulus started the game for Syracuse (2-4, 0-2), but completed just 5- of-9 passes for 30 yards and also tossed an interception. He was replaced by Ryan Nassib, who threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 7-of-16 efficiency.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the contest with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Devine.
West Virginia extended its lead to 14-0 in the final seconds of the opening frame when Ryan Clarke scored on a one-yard run.
The Mountaineers continued their dominance in the second quarter, as Clarke found the endzone once again, this time scoring on a three-yard run. However, the two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving WVU's lead at 20-0.
West Virginia did not waste much time extending its lead to 27-0 however, as Jock Sanders rumbled into the endzone on a nine-yard run with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.
Ryan Nassib, who took over for Paulus to begin the second half, connected with Mike Williams for a 50-yard scoring strike early in the third quarter, but a missed extra point left the Orange down by a 21-point margin.
Syracuse's deficit continued to grow in the fourth frame when Devine scored on a four-yard run, giving the Mountaineers a strong, 34-6 advantage.
The Orange would not quit however, as Nassib found Marcus Sales for a 24-yard touchdown pass, but it was too late for Syracuse to make a comeback, as the Orange fell by a 21-point margin.
The Mountaineers racked up 385 total yards in the contest, while the defense for WVU limited the Orange to a mere 222 total yards.
