Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - Noel Devine carried 19 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns, leading the West Virginia Mountaineers to a 24-7 win over the Marshall Thundering Herd in a non-conference tilt at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Geno Smith completed 15-of-21 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown for the Mountaineers (5-1), winners of three straight.
Cody Slate paced Marshall (4-3) with 10 catches for 102 yards, accounting for the lion's share of Brian Anderson's 149 passing yards. Darius Marshall carried 25 times for 82 hard-fought rushing yards, as the Thundering Herd fell short on their bid for a third straight road win.
Marshall drew first blood midway through the opening quarter, when Anderson scored on a 12-yard scamper.
WVU's only first-half points came on a 32-yard field goal by Tyler Bitancurt in the final minute of the second quarter.
Devine kick-started the Mountaineers offense with a 14-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
WVU extended its lead to 17-7 at the 12:31 mark of the fourth quarter, when Smith found Alric Arnett for a 33-yard scoring strike.
Devine sealed things up with a nine-yard touchdown run with just under four minutes to play.
Overall it was a poor showing for the Marshall offense, which committed four turnovers and finished with just 207 yards of total offense.
