Chart Builder Overiew
|
I've tried to make the process creating charts as easy as possible, but still give you the flexibility to customize the look and feel. The Chart Builder is a work in progress so contact me with any issues you find or suggestions for improvement.
Let's get started! Create Data Sets
The first step is to create one or more "data sets". A data set is simply a query against the StatSheet database for a particular stat over a period of time. Each data set will represent one line or column in your chart. Within a Season or End of Season? To ensure the data sets are scaled correctly, you need to select whether you want to run queries within a particular season or run queries using the end-of-season totals. Currently, I only have in-season data for 2007-2008 (more is coming soon). So if you select "Within a Season," you will be running queries within that season. If you select "End of Season," you can query end of season stats between 1996-2008. Select a Start and End Date Next you need to select your start and end dates. If you selected "Within a Season" above, you will be choosing the start and end weeks for your query. If you selected "End of Season", you will be choosing the start and end seasons. Select a Category and team or player Now we get to the point where you select the thing you want to query. Currently you can query team stats and player stats (more coming later). This is called the Category. After you select a Category, you need to find the team or player that you are interested in charting. Simply type the name in the search box and click the Find link. Feel free to enter partial names (like "North Caro" or "Curry"). After a couple of seconds the matching entries will be populated in a drop-down box right below the search box. Select the one you want. Select a Stat After you've selected your Category and team/player, you need to pick the stat you want to query. Select a Stat Type and Stat. Then click the CREATE DATA SET button. Rinse and Repeat (up to 8 more times) Simple as that! You can add up to 9 data sets. Why stop at 9? Much more than that and charts can start to look a little unwieldy. But I'm happy to increase that limit. You just need to ask. You can remove any of the data sets by clicking the "remove" link that is displayed in the table for each data set. Configure Chart Settings
Once you've created some data sets, it is time to configure a few chart settings. Chart Title Put something meaningful for the title as it will be displayed in the header of the chart. Chart Description Here you can be a little more verbose about the purpose of the chart. What does it show in your opinion? Why is the chart significant? Other users will be reading this to understand what your chart is about. Format Options This is where you can select the type of chart you want to display (line, column, etc.), the width of the chart (max of 1000 pixels) and height of the chart (max of 1000 pixels). The image version of a chart can be a max of 300,000 pixels total. So if you are interested in the image version of the chart, your dimensions (height x width) should not exceed 300,000 (1000x300 would work but not 1000x500). Color Options You can configure the background and text color for the chart. Click on the little square to select colors using a color swatch. I've also created some Color Templates that will autopopulate the background and text colors based on their textual descriptions (white on black, red on white, etc.) Review and Save Your Chart
Each chart comes in two variations: a flash-based version and an image. You can switch between the two by clicking the "switch to an Image" or "switch to Flash" links. If everything looks good with your chart, you can save it. To do so you must be logged in. Signup for an account if you don't have one or login if you do. When you save a chart, both the flash-based version as well as the image version will be saved and you can access both from the chart's main page. Currently, you cannot edit a saved chart so try to get it the way you want it before you save it. What if you want to make a change to a saved chart? Create a new one. What if you really really want to edit charts after you save them? Tell me and I'll consider adding that as a feature. |
