General Discussion → 08/09 Essential CBB Reading Materials   [reply]

Thanks Mike!  The season is right around the corner.

StatSheet Question and Answer → Pre-game and post-game links   [reply]

I’ve got it covered!  if you visit the “pregame” link after the game it will take you to the postgame page.  So you can give out either link (pregame or postgame) and it will take you to the right place.  Thanks for asking.

StatSheet Blog → When is a basketball game statistically over?   [reply]

Now that you mention, it would be interesting to superimpose a graph of the “lead safeness” on top of the usual game flow chart. I’ll work on that.

StatSheet Feature Requests → Custom Teams   [reply]

What information/stats would you like to see with your “team”?  You can add players from different teams to your My StatSheet page.  Or are you wanting to see their combined stats as part of your “team stats”?  Interesting idea and definitely doable.  Just give me a few more ideas on what you’d like to see.

Where do you play currently?

StatSheet Bug Reports → Found a bug?   [reply]

Fixed!  Thanks for letting me know.

StatSheet Feedback → Tell me what you think!   [reply]

Hi Kenny,

1) You can’t currently, but I’m going to revamp the Players section in the next couple of months and it will offer a lot more flexibility in how you view the stat leaders.  I’ll keep your suggestions in mind.

2) Points produced is a rather complicated formula developed by Dean Oliver.  Check out his excellent book Basketball on Paper for more details.  And yes, Offensive Ratings above 100 are common.  Think of it as points generated per 100 possessions.

StatSheet Question and Answer → Can I have a data dump of your database?   [reply]

The one word answer is: No.

Now for the much longer answer:

I wish StatSheet was a totally open wiki that allowed anyone to take and contribute data freely, but that's just not the case. Unfortunately, sports stats cost money in many cases—especially college stats. And we aren't talking a small amount of money. I'm currently paying a significant amount of money every year out of pocket to fund some of the stats you see on StatSheet. That means StatSheet has to be a legitimate business to make it long-term.

Despite the fact that I can't simply give away all the stats and expect to turn a profit, my contract with STATS LLC requires that I don't redistribute their stats freely. That also means I have to make a best effort at stopping people from scraping the StatSheet site (aka, downloading the entire site for the purpose of collecting all the stats). So I block IP addresses from accessing the site that seem to be using automated scripts to download content. Believe me, I wish I didn't have to do this, but right now it doesn't make sense to me that I pay a bunch of money for these stats just so other people can download them for free and use them independent of the StatSheet website. At least I don't charge to access the StatSheet website like many of competitors!

StatSheet Question and Answer → Where do you get your stats?   [reply]

The stats you see on StatSheet come from a combination of sources:

  • STATS LLC provides current season stats plus some historical stats

  • Various individuals have donated stats they've tracked over a period of years (hat tip to Vic and Jeff especially)

  • The NCAA and various teams and conferences have donated stats.  For example, I've started a project to collect boxscores for every D1 school.  Most of the time these come in paper form and I have to do the grunt work to convert them to digital format.

  • I also compute a lot of stats. Tempo-free stats and referee stats are just two examples of a large number of stats that I dynamically compute based on other information in the StatSheet database (e.g., boxscores)

StatSheet Feature Requests → Gotta a request? Try me.   [reply]

I'm very receptive to suggestions.  Some of the really cool features on StatSheet have come from various ideas people have given me.

StatSheet Bug Reports → Found a bug?   [reply]

Or is something not working quite right?  Let me know and I'll get it fixed asap.  I get an email every time a Server Error is generated, but any additional information you can provide would be helpful.  Thanks!

StatSheet Feedback → Tell me what you think!   [reply]

I'm always interested in getting feedback about StatSheet.  Good or bad—I'll take it either way.  I want to make sure StatSheet evolves into a highly usable site while offering new features all the time.

Referee Comparisons → Curtis Shaw vs Steve Welmer   [reply]

Take a look at their stats since ‘96. Even though Steve has called a few more games, Curtis has significantly more fouls, techs, dqs, just about every category.

Referee Stats → Season Trends   [reply]

Are the refs sitting on their whistle more or are players not committing as many fouls?

The season charts show the season averages for various foul-related stats since 1996-1997. Season averages are computed by averaging a stat over all the games played during a season. Last season there were over 5,500 games so the data set is large.

Two interesting points about these charts. First, they are very consistent. You don’t see large disparties from year to year. Second, the number of fouls, disqualifications, technicals and ejections have been on the decline for the last 4 or 5 years. Are the refs sitting on their whistle more or are players not committing as many fouls?
